You never know until you get there

Punamāhaka, or, as the vast majority of people will know it, Moke Lake, is a true gem in the Southern Lakes Crown. Punamāhaka as a name describes twin lakes, referring to the unusual shape of the lake formed by the surrounding majestic peaks of Ben Lomond, Wedge Peak and Mt. Hanley. The way in which these beautiful mauka (mountains) come together creates this unusual shape, and creates an incredible micro climate.

As you make your way along one of the most beautiful gravel roads, skirting along the bottom of the awe inspiring Bob’s Peak with its incredibly steep pitch, driving past Lake Kirkpatrick, it’s only then that you find out what the weather will bring for your visit. You can get a good idea what the weather will be doing, but ultimately there is always this incredible moment of anticipation right up until you can see with your own eyes what the weather is actually doing.

When Tāwhirimatea (Atua / ancestor of the wind) is busy elsewhere, the reflections on the surface of the lake mirroring the surrounding peaks are just .. yeah, it’s an experience, so much more than a photograph. The thrill of finding this place on a cold crisp night, with no moon nor cloud in the sky, delivers you right into the middle of no words territory.

That doesn’t mean it’s not worth it on a wild day, one where Tāwhirimatea has decided it’s time for his visit, and he just loves the way in which he can move between these majestic giants. Hold on tight, fasten up your jacket and prepare to meet nature full on. The connection is unavoidable and invigorating.

There’s lots of room to explore and a fancy new bridge across the water from the main car park has transformed access during the winter months. We love this place for one of our Starry Nights Adventures with a Little Bit Extra. Don’t worry, we’ll only guide you up here if we’re as sure as we can be that the weather will suit what we’re up to.

It’s the perfect place for photographs on a Day Into Night Tour, providing a dreamy backdrop for couples, families and friends. This is one of those places where you can feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, yet it doesn’t take an absolute age to get here. Absolutely any time of year, day or night, it’s always awe inspiring.

We can visit here on one of our Starry Night Adventures, it’s really best to choose a little bit extra for this destination. This is also one of the most perfect places to view Kā Kurakura o Hinenuitepō (Aurora Australis) if she decides to grace us with her presence.

We can include it on an AuthenticAs Queenstown Adventure, and if you let us know it can be part of your journey to The Top & Back.

Alternatively, emailus@authenticAs.org and we can curate a bespoke adventure for you, your family or friends. Remember, all of our AuthenticAs Adventures are private, so it will only be you with us, so every trip is catered to what you’re looking for.
